Colorectal cancer is the most preventable cancer. Current medical guidelines recommend having your first colonoscopy at age 45. If you have had other intestinal or GI tract issues such as IBS, diverticulitis, crohns disease, ulcers, acid refulx, etc... your doctor might recommend you have a colonoscopy as well. Colonoscopy prep is quite easy, don't be fooled by all the scary stories you hear. This is a vital screening procedure that everyone will need at some point in their life. Don't put it off, this is an essential screening that could literally save your life.

Some people may avoid the procedure out of embarrassment or a lack of willingness to prepare. There are a variety of bowel preparations available, each with its own size and flavor profile. Moreover, the colonoscopy nurses and doctors are sensitive to your privacy throughout the process.

▶️ A colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure that examines the large intestine's inside. Colonoscopy is the most accurate diagnostic for colon and rectum cancer, with a track record of detecting the disease early and saving lives. A colonoscope, often known as a scope, is used to do the inspection. This long and flexible scope has a camera and the capacity to extract tissue (polyps). A colonoscopy is commonly used to assess gastrointestinal symptoms such as bleeding, abdominal pain, IBS, or bowel changes.

▶️ What preparations are required?

Your doctor will advise you as to what food limitations to follow and how to cleanse your bowels prior to the procedure. In general, the day before the procedure, you will limit your meals to clear liquids and consume either a significant volume of a specific cleansing solution or special oral laxatives. For the procedure to be precise and thorough, the colon must be entirely cleaned out, so be sure to follow your doctor's instructions.

▶️ During a colonoscopy, what happens?

Colonoscopy is a painless procedure that is well tolerated. An anesthesiologist will sedate you and you will not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. You'll lie on your side while your doctor examines the lining of your large intestine with a colonoscope. As the colonoscope is progressively withdrawn, your doctor will examine the lining once more. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes on average, but allow two to three hours total for waiting, preparation, and recovery. In certain circumstances, the doctor cannot pass the colonoscope through the entire colon to where it meets the small intestine. If additional testing is required, your doctor will let you know.
