The Punjab and Haryana High Court has acquitted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the 2002 murder case of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.
Chhatrapati, who published a newspaper in Sirsa, Haryana, had reported allegations of sexual exploitation inside the Dera Sacha Sauda. He was shot outside his residence in October 2002 and later died from his injuries.
In 2019, a special CBI court in Panchkula convicted Ram Rahim and others under charges of murder and criminal conspiracy, sentencing them to life imprisonment.
However, the High Court has now set aside the conviction of Ram Rahim in this case, citing doubts related to the reliability of key forensic evidence during the appeal proceedings.
Despite this acquittal, Ram Rahim will remain in prison as he is currently serving a 20-year sentence in two rape cases decided in 2017.
