It was the opening act of what became the Armenian Genocide — the killing of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1923. This is the case that drove Raphael Lemkin to coin the word "genocide" in 1944, and the case the international system has been least willing to apply that word to ever since.
