In this gentle Qigong practice, Scoop Hands becomes a moving meditation for letting go of fear, anxiety, and stored tension in the body. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, this exercise supports the Water element — the energy of winter — which is connected with the kidneys, adrenal system, and our sense of safety and inner strength.
As we move slowly and with awareness, the breath guides the hands. Inhale as you scoop, and exhale as you circle your hand around, allowing tension and emotional weight to gently dissolve. One hand rests on the lower back over the kidneys, while the other crosses the body and makes a slow, flowing circle.
Imagine your hands moving through water — dragging through it, scooping it up, and then watching as it drips softly from your fingertips. As you scoop, you gather up whatever you are ready to release: fear, worry, fatigue, or emotional heaviness. As your fingers open and the hand circles, you allow that energy to slowly drip away, leaving you lighter, calmer, and more grounded.
Repeat this movement several times on one side, staying present and gently watching the moving hand. Let the mind settle into the rhythm of the breath and the flow of the movement. When it feels complete, change hands and repeat on the other side, bringing balance and harmony to the body and nervous system.
This practice is especially supportive during the winter months, when we naturally turn inward and may feel more tired, anxious, or unsettled. Scoop Hands helps warm the body from within, conserve energy, and restore a feeling of inner safety and quiet strength.
