In this digital atelier, the main subject of the discovery is a snowflake. They are analysed from the perspective of different school subjects – mathematics, geometry, chemistry, physics and arts.
The atelier encourages the shift from the traditional, simplified understanding of a snowflake into a more complex, interesting exploration of this natural phenomenon. Students are presented with important facts such as – a snowflake forms not from a droplet of water but from a speck of dust; a water molecule which is made of one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms is responsible for the six-sided shape so familiar to us and which is usually attributed to snowflakes. Moreover, students explore the variety of shapes of snowflakes influenced by temperature and humidity.
Also, with the help of photographers, participants of the workshop are introduced with the artistic side of snowflakes as well as some historical facts about their exploration which first started with Johannes Kepler who was interested in their symmetry. A famous mathematician and philosopher Rene Descartes already in 1635 described the form of a snowflake (as well as he could do this without a microscope).
