Some of the strangest weapons of World War II weren’t “smart” because of electronics, but because they relied on living creatures to guide weapons.
In the Soviet Union, dogs were trained for anti-tank missions, aiming to use their instincts to counter the German tank threat. In the United States, researchers explored ‘bat bombs,’ a project aimed at releasing bats carrying incendiary devices, hoping to create a weapon more destructive than conventional bombs. And psychologist B. F. Skinner proposed something even more surreal: a glide bomb guided by pigeons - Project ORCON.
What engineering challenges drove people to involve animals in their wars? How did these unconventional systems actually work? Were they ingenious solutions or desperate gambles? And where do we draw the line between wartime innovation and reckless experimentation?
A documentary story of bizarre engineering, real historical programs, and the uncomfortable limits of control, when the military turns the animals into ‘guided munitions’.
