In this 1-minute video Prof. Emma J Crosbie explains:
TRANSCRIPT
Cervical screening is a really important weapon against cervical cancer. So we know that it prevents cervical cancer. We thought that a urine self-sample could be another option for people who currently aren't screened. And so we wanted to see how accurate it was. Urine picked up around 16% of people as having an HPV infection, while a cervical sample picked up around 13.5%. So you can see that we picked up slightly more HPV infections with urine. So when we look at the relative specificity, if you like, of urine versus cervical sampling for HPV detection, it was really good. It was 97%. And when we look at sensitivity, urine picked up 24 of those 25. So it had really excellent sensitivity as well, even bearing in mind small numbers.
