A Brief History of “Silent Night”

“Silent Night” (originally “Stille Nacht”) was written in 1818 in Oberndorf, Austria. The lyrics were written by Joseph Mohr, a young priest, and the melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, a local schoolteacher and organist. When the church organ became unusable one Christmas Eve, Gruber wrote a gentle melody that could be played on guitar. That first performance on December 24, 1818, became the beginning of one of the world’s most beloved Christmas carols.
