What's the difference between a first focal plane (FFP) and a second focal plane SFP) reticle?
In first focal plane scopes, the reticle shrinks and enlarges in proportion to the magnification. So the ranging hashmark information remains constant (eg 1 MOA hashmark = 1 inch at 100 yards) at all magnifications, making range estimation and holdovers a breeze. With FFP scopes, however, it can be tricky to design a reticle that looks good and is functional at both min and max magnification.
In second focal plane scopes, the size of the reticle is fixed regardless of magnification. The reticle remains, large, visible, and consistent at all times. On SFP scopes, however, the ranging hashmarks only true at max magnification. Ranging and holdovers require a bit of mental math at lower magnifications.
The Monstrum Ladon 1-6x LPVO, shown here with the CM7 reticle, is offered in both first focal plane and second focal plane versions.
