The census is carried out every 10 years and is a survey of all the households in England and Wales. Information from the census helps to inform policy making, plan public services, and to inform where billions of pounds are spent, for instance on roads, schools and hospitals. Every household in Essex will be sent a letter at the beginning of March letting them know how they can take part. The Census online questionnaire is quick and easy to complete.

This video by Dewey, the Vice Chair of Basildon Pride emphasises that for the first time ever, LGBTQI+ people will be able to record their sexual orientation and gender identity in the census. You don't have to out yourself to take part, there is a way to edit your personal census data without anyone finding out. If you need to answer separately from the people you live with you can request and individual online access code to start a separate census www.census.gov.uk/en/request/access-code/individual/
