At times sentimental and nostalgic, and then brisk and bubbling, Woodland Sketches was composed by MacDowell in 1896. It consists of ten pieces, five of which are included here. The composer believed that music is supposed to evoke a mood, much in the same way that poetry does. It is in this spirit that these short pieces were written.
