STORYLINE:

The Israeli army continued its siege of Arafat's headquarters in Ramallah on Wednesday despite the U.N. Security Council demand to end it.

The curfew in Ramallah was lifted in the morning in order to allow the citizens to buy food and medicines. Palestinians rushed to the town's centre, causing traffic jams.

In Hebron, the army blew up a Palestinian house and arrested two brothers. Details on the reason for the demolition and arrests were not immediately available.

The Israeli government argues that house demolitions create an important deterrent against suicide bombings and other attacks on Israeli civilians.

The divided West Bank city of Hebron was still under curfew on Wednesday, two days after a Palestinian gunman opened fire on visitors attending Jewish holiday celebrations, killing a man and wounding three of his sons.

Most of the city's 130,000 Palestinians were confined to their homes by an Israeli army curfew.
