gratitude wearing love's clothes.

That's the fear this whole song is built on. Not abandonment, the opposite. Being kept, the way you'd keep something useful, and never quite finding out if you'd still be chosen for nothing.

I keep thinking about how many of us do this without noticing. Make
ourselves so necessary that leaving would cost too much. It feels like
security. It's actually just a really elaborate way of avoiding the question.
