This simple wall clock exercise is designed to increase mobility of your upper back in all three planes. Why is that important?
The thoracic part of your spine, the mid back, can get stiff very easily. Naturally it isn't as mobile as the lumbar or the neck because it has the ribs attached to it. The ribs, together with the thoracic spine make the thoracic cage which protects the heart and lungs.
However when this area gets tight from sitting, driving and computer work, it can also get painful. This exercise aims to increase mobility in your back and increase coordination with how you back moves with the rest of the body.
Stand facing the wall and imagine there is a clock drawn on it with 12 O'Clock above you and 6 O'clock below you. Now reach up to 12 O'Clock with one hand and then alternate that with the other. Work your way round the clock alternating hands as you go.
To make the motion more advanced you can put a weight in one or both hands. This will start to strengthen and mobilize your upper back at the same time.
