In traditional Japanese Jujitsu, the Double Hold Down and Lock is a core ground control technique taught at Green Belt level within the Total Self Defence syllabus. The aim of the technique is to demonstrate effective positional dominance, control of an opponent’s limbs, and the correct application of leverage to restrain an attacker safely and efficiently. It reinforces the jujitsu principle of maximum effect with minimum effort, using bodyweight and structure rather than brute strength.
The technique is usually applied after taking an opponent to the ground through a throw, sweep, or takedown. Once the attacker is grounded, the defender transitions into a secure hold-down position, commonly similar to a scarf hold. The defender positions their body at a right angle across the opponent’s chest, maintaining a low centre of gravity and strong base to prevent escape.
The “double” element of the technique refers to the control of both arms. One arm is pinned beneath the defender’s body and controlled through pressure and positioning, while the second arm is isolated and secured using a joint lock. This may involve a wrist or arm lock, applied by controlling the limb close to the body and rotating the joint using leverage from the hips and upper body. Correct placement of the hands, elbows, and shoulders ensures the opponent’s arms are immobilised and unable to strike or push away.
At Green Belt level, emphasis is placed on control, balance, and awareness rather than speed or force. The technique must be applied smoothly, with constant observation of the opponent’s reactions. The Double Hold Down and Lock demonstrates the ability to dominate a grounded opponent, maintain personal safety, and apply controlled restraint appropriate to a self-defence situation, making it a key requirement within the Total Self Defence Japanese Jujitsu syllabus.
