The Valve Shutdown Drill (V-Drill) is an essential skill for all Technical Divers and one of the most difficult and challenging skills in Technical Diving training. Performing the skill while in good trim and neutral buoyancy will test the skill of any proficient diver.

It can take as little as 128 seconds for a full scuba tank to empty due to a valve or hose failure. In the event of an equipment problem resulting in rapidly escaping gas from the tanks, a well trained Tec Diver should be able to reach back and shutdown the offending valve to save gas. In an emergency situation, speed and procedural accuracy, over form, is key. Gas can escape at a rapid rate of over 1,000 liters per minute. The PADI Tec-40 certification performance standard requires the Tec Diver to shut down and reopen all 3 valves within 60 seconds.

The V-Drill skill hones the Tech Diver to develop a disciplined mindset, agility and motor skill to shut down and reopen all 3 valves in a BackMount Doubles system. The V-Drill can start and end in any valve. What matters is the proficiency to shutdown and re-open any valve depending on the situation.

This is a video of my Tec student learning and practicing the V-Drill. While not perfect, he is still learning and completed the skill in 45 seconds — each shutdown sequence was done correctly.
