It’s not a competition, as some might believe, rather they complement one another. With new EU legislation, the number of heat pumps is set to quadruple by 2030. And they play an important role within a district energy network, by offering short-term flexibility. However, we need to look at the entire system to cover the longer timeframes. This is where system integration, thermal storage and power-to-heat come into play. We need an integrated system that uses excess heat to achieve the energy transition.
