Adi Shankara (आदि शंकर) or Sankaracharya (शंकराचार्य) was a great Indian philosopher and theologian who lived in the 8th century. Each of these mathas is headed by a Sankaracharya, who is considered the spiritual successor of Adi Shankara. The Sankaracharya of Govardhan Math in Puri is the spiritual leader for the Eastern part of India. They reside there to guide devotees, preserve ancient scriptures, teach Advaita Vedanta philosophy, and maintain the spiritual traditions established by Adi Shankara. Puri was chosen because it is one of the four most sacred pilgrimage sites (Char Dham - चार धाम) for Hindus, with the famous Jagannath Temple.
