Arguing is a normal part of life but how do we teach children to be assertive, resilient and confident in their relationships?
This short film highlights how children learn to manage conflict and develop relationships from a very early age, often modelling their behaviour after their parents. The social skills they practice in the playground will serve as a foundation for their future interactions, communication skills in relationships and personal emotional wellbeing in later life.
How can parents help children learn about friendships and deal with fall outs positively?
As parents, you can help your child learn how to navigate social interactions by teaching them to view conversations as a dance, one that naturally involves taking turns. This can be done through active means by encouraging them, but also in the behaviour you model and how you resolve tricky interactions in your everyday relationships.
NHS Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Dr Rebecca Johnson, talks about how parents can teach their children how to tune into the needs of other person and how the ability of putting ourselves into their shoes is an important life skill.
This video also explores how children feel when they see people arguing and answers common questions like “What do you say when you fall out with friends at school?” and “What do you say when you want to make up with your friends?”
New resources based on the Solihull Approach, created by psychologists and primary schools to promote connected relationships are now available at https://www.togetherness.co.uk/fallin..., designed to help children to learn and thrive as they grow in independence.
