During the Tudor period, there was a method of torture which became infamous for it's brutality and suffering. The Rack was used at the Tower of London during the reigns of Tudor monarchs such as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I and it was used to gain information and confessions from a prisoner. The Rack was a wooden frame in which a prisoner would be placed on and then stretched with their arms and legs being pulled severely and put under so much strain. It was so painful and severe that some people who were racked even died on the wooden device. It was brought to England during the Medieval period and the 1400s, but it existed even in Ancient Greece and Rome.
There was one woman who was racked also at the Tower of London. Anne Askew was implicated in a religious plot, and she was accused of being a heretic but to extract information she was racked severely. She was broken by the torture device, and was even executed later for her crimes. But the rack led to the Tower of London becoming notorious for it's suffering and pain. It has gone down in History as one of the most brutal torture methods ever used against people.
