Emotional highlights from the Fortuna Sittard - Team Fernando Ricksen Tribute Match.
Fernando Ricksen began his career as a teenager with the Dutch club and his first team couldn't do something less than to pay tribute to the former Rangers great. Fortuna hosted a testimonial match for Ricksen that included many of his old friends & teammates. The scenes that came from the match are very emotional as his family, friends & fans showed their appreciation for the 37 year old.
Six months before, Ricksen told the world that he was suffering from the terminal disease, ALS. His heartbreaking news was a reminder of how fickle & unfair life can be. But the match on Saturday 25/5/2014 was to celebrate the man and his legacy.
Nacho Novo scored the goal of the match as the goalkeeper was in true testimonial mode but it was Ricksen who brought the house down with a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Fortuna’s chairman Martin Masset declared that one of the grandstands at Trendwork Arena would be named after Ricksen.
