85% of historic Olympic venues still in use according to IOC report

Описание: An overwhelming amount of Olympic venues from the history of the Games are still in use, an extensive report into post-Games use has revealed.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) report into Olympic venues found that 85 percent of the 817 permanent venues over 125 years remain in use. From the 21st century Games, this number rises to 92 percent, creating wide-ranging benefits for residents in Olympic host cities and regions.

The report is the first ever official inventory of the post-Games use of Olympic venues. It tracks the use of permanent and temporary venues at 51 summer and winter editions of the Olympic Games, from Athens 1896 to PyeongChang 2018.

IOC Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi said: “We are thrilled to see that the overwhelming majority of Olympic venues continue to offer sports competition and training opportunities at elite and grassroots level, while creating health and social benefits.”

The report includes five key findings:

Of the 206 permanent Olympic venues used in 21st century, 92 percent are still in use

Overall, 82 percent of all 817 permanent venues used since Athens 1896 are still in use.

The percentage of new permanent venues (built for the Games) and existing permanent venues (which had already existed) still in use is 87 & 83 percent respectively.

87 percent of complex venues - eg: Stadiums, Olympic Villages, swimming pools, velodromes, ski jumping hills, sliding centres and ice hockey stadiums are still in use.

The proportion of temporary venues used has evolved in the 21st century.

“Olympic hosts now have more flexibility to design the Games so that they meet the long-term development plans of a city or region,” said Marie Sallois, IOC Director for Corporate and Sustainable Development. “Today it is the Games that adapt to their host and not the other way around.”
