Mark A. Rayner (https://markarayner.com/) and I will be launching Season Four of our podcast Re-Creative (https://re-creative.ca/) sometime in October. In preparation, I’m releasing previous episodes weekly here. This is the third episode of Re-Creative (http://www.re-creative.ca) from our first season in which Mark and I talk to the man who generously agreed to be our first official guest… Canadian writer of speculative fiction and fantasy Douglas Smith.
Doug describes himself as “primarily a fantasy writer,” so it’s no surprise that this famous painting by the Swiss Symbolist, Arnold Böcklin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_...) has inspired not only him, but one of his favorite writers, Roger Zelazny (with whom his own fiction has been favourably compared by none other than Spider Robinson).
Mark, Joe and Douglas talk about the painting, the fickle nature of how artists are quite often not known in their lifetimes, and how all of these influence can inform one’s own creative work.
Doug explains how he came to know this painting, which he first saw in Berlin, visiting the place where his father had been 60 years earlier, after WWII.
