SC Lifts Govt's Ban On MediaOne, Says 'Can't Raise Security Claim In Thin Air' | Urban Debate

The top court has pulled up the central government over it's decision to ban Malayalam news channel Media One. The Supreme Court criticised the Centre for imposing a broadcast restriction by invoking "national security" fears that were "thin air" on April 5 and ordered Media One channel's broadcast licence renewal in four weeks. Detailed rules were also provided in a ruling by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud about the improper usage of "sealed cover" by the government. The Centre's efforts to provide intelligence reports under a sealed cover in the High Court and obtain a negative ruling against Media One were against natural justice, the CJI found, because both natural justice and open justice are opposed to it.
