Understanding STARTTLS vs. SSL/TLS: What You Need to Know
STARTTLS and SSL/TLS both aim to encrypt communications, but they differ in how encryption is initiated. SSL/TLS, also known as implicit TLS, establishes an encrypted connection from the start, typically on a dedicated port like 465 for SMTPS. In contrast, STARTTLS (opportunistic TLS) begins with an unencrypted connection on the standard port, like 25 for SMTP, and then "upgrades" to an encrypted connection using commands within the protocol. This offers backward compatibility with servers that don't support encryption. While STARTTLS can be vulnerable to downgrade attacks if improperly implemented, it's generally preferred for its flexibility, allowing clients to communicate even if encryption fails. Both protocols ultimately rely on TLS to provide confidentiality and integrity to the data transmitted.
