Before "Scream" made meta-horror mainstream, before anyone used the word self-referential about a slasher, these two were doing something genuinely strange, making horror films about what horror films do to the people who love them too much.

"Fade To Black" (1980, dir. Vernon Zimmerman) - a film-obsessed loner starts killing people dressed as his favourite movie characters. Dennis Christopher in a performance that should have made him a star. Psychological, melancholic and far more unsettling than its B-movie reputation suggests.

"Popcorn" (1991, dir. Mark Herrier) - film students host an all-night horror marathon in a crumbling cinema. Someone in the audience isn't there to watch. A love letter to grindhouse cinema and a genuinely inventive slasher that gets better every time you see it.

Two films. One dark idea about what cinema does to obsessive minds.
