Chesterton’s observation about Cobbett (that "he could see before he could read") illuminates Wolfe’s argument perfectly. Cobbett trusted direct perception before ideology, experience before doctrine. Modern art, Wolfe contends, does the reverse: one must read before one can see. The viewer is instructed in advance what the painting means, why it matters, and where it stands in the grand historical narrative. Vision becomes secondary, almost suspect, unless it has first been certified by theory.
