The first ever Pokemon World Championship is underway in Sydney, Australia.

Eight international Pokemon Champions are challenging each other in the ultimate 'pocket monster' battle. The finalists are using their own gameboys to battle it out on a video screen.

The three day event is taking place in the Pokemon Park, an interactive area where children and adults can enjoy concerts, dancing and have a try at the latest Pokemon products.

The Pokemon 2000 World Championship is part of the largest free Pokemon show on earth. Competitors from eight countries will flex their Poke-muscles to determine the world's ultimate Pokemon Master.

Finalists have made it to the Olympic city via national championships held in their home countries. Competitors from Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, United States and the UK made it to Sydney for the big showdown.
As one of the most popular video games worldwide, Pokemon Stadium allows participants to engage in exciting Pokemon battles regardless of their language or culture.

More than 150 thousand people are expected to visit Pokemon Park which features video games, free Pokemon shows, concerts and a Pokemon disco. The contest is for both children and adults.

The ultimate champion will be decided in the grand finale on Friday (22/9).

An Olympic-style closing ceremony will follow the announcement of the Pokemon Champ. A gold, silver and bronze presentation and national anthems will honour the winners of this event.
