How School Cafeterias Can Reduce Food Waste: 50%-75% of food waste in schools are fruits &vegetables

Описание: Approximately 100,000 schools in the USA, serve lunch to almost 30 million students everyday. Food waste audits were done in many schools in order to measure food waste in the school cafeteria. The audit reports estimate that 530,000 tons, or over 1 billion pounds of food is wasted from school cafeterias each year…That averages to almost 40lbs of food waste per student each day. The estimated costs of the food waste is almost 1.7 billion dollars each year. Many food waste audit reports also estimated that between 50-75% of the food that is being uneaten and discarded during school lunches are fruits & vegetables.
Unripe fruits, poor menu design, large portion sizes, and short lunch times represent just a few of the many reasons why food is wasted in schools. After the food waste audit report, many schools implemented strategies which resulted in a reduction in food waste.
