If Baroque music exists today, it is only thanks to him: Claudio Monteverdi (Cremona, 1567 - Venice, 1643).
He is, as the great innovator that he was, the man to whom we owe the birth of modern opera and the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music. Unfortunately, much of Monteverdi's production, including many of his plays, has been lost. His surviving music includes nine books of madrigals, several sacred music works, and three complete operas. His “L'Orfeo,” one of the earliest melodramas ever written, is still widely performed in modern days. Late in his life he also wrote operas for Venice, including “Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria” and “L'incoronazione di Poppea.” He mastered the techniques of earlier Renaissance polyphony, as evidenced in his madrigals, and undertook major developments in the use of melody by beginning to employ the “basso continuo” technique, main characteristic of the music during Baroque Era, despite being heavily criticized by his contemporary colleagues.
