The medulla oblongata is one of the three regions that make up the brainstem.
The medulla houses essential ascending and descending nerve tracts as well as brainstem nuclei.
The anterior surface of the medulla has several structures namely the three fissures, the pyramids, the olives, and five cranial nerves. Posterior surface has a midline structure, the posterior median sulcus.
The medulla itself is typically divided into two regions i.e. the open and the closed medulla.
