A Horse with No Name (America, 1971) is an atmospheric, folk-rock track sung and written by Dewey Bunnell for the band’s self-titled debut album. Inspired by Bunnell’s childhood memories of the Arizona and New Mexico desert and the surreal art of Salvador Dalí, the song captures a feeling of solitary escape. The arrangement is driven by a driving acoustic rhythm, featuring the interplay of 6 and 12-string guitars and a distinctively melodic bassline. The lush three-part harmonies and organic production established the band’s signature sound, making it the most enduring hit in America’s catalog.
Personnel:
Dewey Bunnell – Lead vocals, acoustic guitar
Gerry Beckley – Backing vocals, 12-string acoustic guitar
Dan Peek – Backing vocals, bass guitar
Kim Haworth – Drums
Ray Cooper - Percussion
