What was supposed to be a simple trip to Jeju Island, South Korea turned into one of the most difficult travel experiences of our lives.
After landing, we were denied entry and taken into a holding area. Our phones were taken away. We were separated. Hours passed with no clear answers. The uncertainty was mentally exhausting.
We were later transferred during transit through China, where again we remained under supervision for several more hours. Communication was restricted, and the conditions were extremely uncomfortable. There was no proper access to food, and sleeping arrangements were basic and inadequate. Time felt very slow when you don’t know what happens next.
Eventually, we were sent back on the next available flight — but at almost 3× the normal ticket price. In that moment, we were stressed, confused, and had very little room to question anything.
I’m not sharing this for drama. Immigration decisions are their authority. But how situations are handled makes a real difference to people going through them.
If you’re planning international travel, be fully prepared — documents, clarity, and emergency funds are very important.
