Schubert’s Four Impromptus, Op. 90, are among the most beloved piano works of the Romantic era—each a world in itself, yet together forming a cohesive journey of contrasts and moods. Written in 1827, the year before his death, these impromptus reveal Schubert at his most introspective and inspired, blending lyricism, drama, and harmonic daring with effortless naturalness.

Impromptu No. 1 in C Minor, D. 899

The first impromptu opens with a restless, almost orchestral sweep—a surging theme that rises and falls in waves of passionate intensity. The drama is palpable, yet beneath its surface lies Schubert’s hallmark lyricism, with inner voices singing through the storm. The contrasting middle section offers a moment of respite, its tender, almost prayer-like phrases floating above murmuring accompaniment. But the storm inevitably returns, sweeping the piece toward its resolute conclusion. This impromptu is Schubert at his most Beethovenian—heroic, storm-tossed, yet deeply human.
