The House and Senate are taking up a bill that would grant same-sex couples the same immigration rights given to heterosexual couples, including the right to sponsor a partner for U.S. residency. Karin Bogliolo and Judy Rickard, a binational couple, share their story with MSNBC's Thomas Roberts.
Update: In United States v. Windsor, the United States Supreme Court held that restricting U.S. federal interpretation of "marriage" and "spouse" to apply only to heterosexual unions, by Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, is unconstitutional under the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment. As a result of the Windsor decision, married same-sex couples now have immigration benefits.
