Coming out of anesthesia after surgery isn’t just waking up—it can feel like coming back from the dead. Many of my patients describe vivid, emotional experiences during emergence. One even told me, “I relived my whole life. I’m a new person.” I see firsthand how surgery and anesthesia can lead to profound shifts in self-awareness, sometimes resembling near-death experiences.
Most people think anesthesia is just a deep sleep. It’s not. To perform surgery safely, we have to shut down your central nervous system—movement, memory, blood pressure, even your body’s natural drive to breathe. It’s a controlled, reversible state that mimics death. And yet, we’re not just shutting things off—we’re also watching for signs of life that still persist underneath the surface.
In this video, I walk you through what really happens during and after anesthesia. We explore how we safely bring you back from this state, the critical role of medications like naloxone or atropine in reversing overdoses or toxins, and how your own mental state and history affect your experience waking up.
But what’s most surprising—and what most people don’t realize—is that the brain doesn’t go completely quiet. Even in deep anesthesia or therapeutic hypothermia (down to 4°C), studies show the subconscious mind remains active. That’s why I emphasize mindset before any procedure. Whether it’s anesthesia, ketamine, meditation, or sleep—when the conscious mind steps aside, the subconscious can do remarkable work.
This hidden state can become a powerful healing modality. And instead of ignoring or fearing it, we should be harnessing it.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to go under—and come back—this video will change how you think about anesthesia forever.
