CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Day 9 in the trial of a former Uvalde CISD police officer continues today after yesterday's testimony offered a harrowing glimpse into the lives of children who survived the Robb Elementary shooting, as teachers and parents relived moments that have permanently altered their families.
Former Robb Elementary teacher Mercedes Salas described hearing children scream, then falling silent after gunshots rang out near her classroom. She testified about trying to calm her students, acknowledging their fear and urging them to pray quietly as shots echoed nearby. Salas and other teachers recounted the minutes of terror they endured with their students before help arrived, accounts now preserved as part of the official court record.
Parents also took the stand, detailing the lasting physical and emotional injuries their children carry. Jamie Torres testified about her daughter Khloie, who was wounded in Room 112 and made repeated 911 calls while surrounded by classmates who had been killed. Torres told jurors her daughter continues to suffer headaches from fragments in her head and pain in her leg that limits how far she can walk.
Jurors also heard from Melody Flores, a former special education aide who testified she encountered the shooter as she ran to lock a door and warn others. Flores described seeing the gunman dressed in black and watching muzzle flashes as he fired at her while she ran. She said she fell to her knees, got back up, and continued trying to warn teachers until she encountered an officer outside — later identified as the defendant, Adrian Gonzales.
Flores testified she repeatedly urged the officer to stop the gunman before he entered the fourth-grade building, telling jurors he did nothing despite her warnings. She said teachers tried to pull her into classrooms for safety, but she kept running to alert others before finally taking cover.
