Pipeline Reef Dying 2024

Описание: Every summer I scuba dive and video the reef at Pipeline on Oahu North Shore to check out the health of the corals and marine life. A few days ago I dove the second reef at Pipeline at about 40 feet deep. This part of the reef usually has lots of beautiful three foot tall mound and lob corals. On this dive I was bummed to see that over 90% of the large corals had died! The reef looks like someone had poured battery acid on it. This is very concerning because the dead corals could effect beach erosion and even change the shape of the surf this upcoming winter. The second reef at Pipeline is 200 yards offshore and should not be affected by land based pollution like sewage or sunscreen as it is too far from shore. What is killing the corals along Oahu North Shore? We don't know for sure but it could be an electrical discharge and sonar from passing submarines. I am currently working with the USGS coral research team and hopefully we can figure out what is happening to the reef at Pipeline! The corals on Oahu South Shore right near Waikiki are healthier then the corals on the north shore and this makes no since because the south shore is where all the people are and there is much more pollution runoff due to the large cities! So far the State of Hawaii does not seem to care about our north shore corals as they won't even respond to my video documentation.
