After last week’s conversation, I kept thinking about something deeper, not just how people are treated when they don’t fit beauty standards, but how early we all learn who deserves gentleness.
No one is born believing that some bodies are worthy of patience while others need to be corrected. These beliefs are learned quietly through classrooms, healthcare spaces, media, and everyday interactions. We learn it in whose pain is taken seriously, who is rushed, who is given grace, and who is given advice.
This conversation isn’t about blame or pointing fingers. It’s about noticing patterns that have gone unnamed for a long time, and how selective gentleness shapes safety, belonging, and the way we move through the world.
When gentleness becomes selective, harm often becomes invisible. And when harm is invisible, people carry it alone.
This reflection invites an honest question: Who did I learn to be gentle with, and who did I learn to evaluate? That question doesn’t require an answer today. It simply asks for awareness.
Because change doesn’t begin with perfection. It begins by slowing down long enough to truly see people as they are, not as assumptions we inherited.
