How To Grind A Rim For Trials Riding

When I recently visited Tartybikes to upgrade my cheap bike we went into more detail on some techniques than I had time for in my vlog. I have half a dozen videos with set up advice and tips and first up is grinding a rim.

Competition style trials bikes usually use a rim brake instead of a disc as they're lighter, have no rotor to bend and have a more precise feel as you are clamping the wheel at the outer most part and don't get the spoke flex or pad wobble you might feel from a disc brake.

The disadvantage of a rim brake is bad performance in the wet. To overcome this riders will take a grinder to the rim to give it vertical textured grooves. Combined with a harder trials specific pad it can increase both wet and dry performance significantly!

Of course the texture will eventually wear smooth so grinding a rim is something that will have to be done frequently (time between grinds depends on pads used, how much you ride and in what conditions).

I must warn that using an angle grinder is dangerous and you should wear the appropriate safety gear, grinding one handed with the tyre on should only be attempted if you are confident with power tools, don't take risks, both Tartybikes and myself are experienced with this technique and don't take responsibility for any injuries trying to copy us.
