This is a question I hear frequently in my clinical practice, and it’s one that’s often misunderstood or dismissed outright.

Men and women stay in abusive relationships for some of the same reasons: family-of-origin issues, codependency, trauma bonds, FOG (fear, obligation, and guilt), children, finances, and religious or cultural pressures. But there are also important differences in why men remain with abusive partners — differences that are rarely acknowledged or taken seriously.

In this video, I explain the most common reasons men don’t leave abusive women, based on years of clinical experience working with male victims of emotional and psychological abuse. These reasons have less to do with weakness or denial, and far more to do with trauma bonding, distorted responsibility, social stigma, and real-world consequences men face when they try to leave.
