A Barbados holiday should not be complete without a Rum tasting tour.
Barbados is the Birthplace of Rum.
We discovered STADES and the WEST INDIES RUM DISTILLERY who offer what we consider is one of the best Rum Distillery tours.
We were lucky to receive a personal and very entertaining tour from Saraih who gave a very detailed explanation of the whole process or RUM making.
The Distillery is situated on the west coast, just up from Bridgetown close to the port, and backs onto the beautiful Brighton Beach.

STADE'S
Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, producer of Planteray Rum’s Barbados range, is the first distillery in the Caribbean to earn the Bonsucro Chain of Custody certification. This guarantees social and environmental responsibility in the production, processing, and trading of sugar. Clarendon and Long Pond distilleries, members of our sister company National Rums of Jamaica, are also certified by Bonsucro. In Fiji, Planteray’s rums are made with FairTrade-certified sugarcane
Back in Barbados, Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery partners with the West Indies Sugar Cane Breeding Station (WISCBS), one of the two oldest sugar cane breeding stations in the world, to develop new sugarcane varieties for improved yield, quality, and resilience. They built the Harper Sugarcane Mill, mentioned above, to provide cane juice for joint research on specially adapted cane varieties.
RUM
Rum is a liquor made by fermenting and then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice. The distillate, a clear liquid, is often aged in barrels of oak. Rum originated in the Caribbean in the 17th century, but today it is produced in nearly every major sugar-producing region of the world, such as the Philippines, where Tanduay Distillers, the largest producer of rum worldwide, has its headquarters.
Rums are produced in various grades. Light rums are commonly used in cocktails, whereas "golden" and "dark" rums were typically consumed straight or neat, iced ("on the rocks"), or used for cooking, but are now commonly consumed with mixers. Premium rums are made to be consumed either straight or iced.
Rum plays a part in the culture of most islands of the West Indies as well as the Maritime provinces and Newfoundland, in Canada. It has associations with the Royal Navy (where it was mixed with water or beer to make grog) and piracy (where it was consumed as bumbo). Rum has served as a medium of economic exchange, used to help fund enterprises such as slavery via triangular trade, organized crime, and military insurgencies such as the American Revolution and the Australian
