-- PRESENTATION: SHINTŌ MUNEN RYŪ KENJUTSU --
The founder of that school Fukui Hyōemon was born in 1700 in the ancient prefecture of Shimotsuke (present Tochigi). He mastered the Ichien Ryū style under Nonaka Gon’nai, excelling in the school's technical aspects as well as its spiritual principles. Starting to wander the country for his Musha Shugyō (kind of pilgrimage which martial arts practitioners used to do to perfect their art), he stopped by the Iizuna Gongen shrine at Togakushi in the Shinshu Province (present Nagano Prefecture) to retire and prayed for 50 days. It is said that he finally had a revelation about the mysteries of the sword, and then founded Shintō Munen Ryū.
