Concerto Symphonique, for piano and orchestra, Op. 4, written in 1919/1920.
Joseph Rosenstock was a Polish Jewish conductor, who notably conducted the Met in New York. This Concerto Symphonique is one of the few compositions he wrote in his life. It is composed in the late romantic style; not strictly a piano concerto because the viola and orchestra have both important solo parts as well. The whole concerto consists of one extended movement, however the concerto goes through many tempi and dynamic changes and seems to contain some sort of sonata form.
The first performance was in Vienna in 1920, with Rosenstock himself as soloist (and the performer in this recording, Bergmann, in the audience). Another performance was on 8 April 1921 with the Dresden Staatsoper under Fritz Busch, with Walter Gieseking as soloist. This recording with Stevan Bergmann is the only recording ever made of the concerto, the viola solo halfway through is played by Willie Bush.
