Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! In this video, you'll be hearing from Joe, Dan and Amelia about three phenomenal flowering shrubs that thrive in the shade: Rhododendrons, Azaleas & Andromeda. These are some garden classics with plenty to offer, and they're all right here at the nursery!
Rhododendrons are prehistoric shrubs whose fossilized pollen has been dated back sixty million years. They burst into bloom in mid-Spring and provide a spectrum of colors in big, bountiful flower clusters. You can find them in red, pink, white, yellow purple and more. Even better, most Rhododendrons are evergreen, so they'll even provide greenery through the winter.
Azaleas are also in the Rhododendron genus, and there are over a thousand varieties of them. There are 26 species of Azalea that are native to North America, with New Jersey's native being the Pinxterbloom Azalea. Azaleas are generally deciduous and tend to bloom a bit earlier than their "true" Rhododendron counterparts.
Andromeda are beautiful, deer-resistant shrubs that love the shade. Also known as Lily of the Valley shrub, Andromeda has recognizable drooping flowers with a light, sweet fragrance. Leaves are normally a deep glossy green, with new growth coming out with a deep red color.
