Jericho sits more than 250 meters below sea level, making it the lowest permanent settlement on Earth. Archaeological layers beneath the site show that people lived here over 10,000 years ago, long before pottery, writing, or metal tools existed.
One of Jericho’s most unsettling discoveries is a series of plastered human skulls, carefully reshaped with facial features and kept inside homes. These were not graves. They were displayed, suggesting ancestor worship or rituals tied to memory, power, and protection.
Jericho also contained a massive stone tower built around 8000 BCE, one of the earliest monumental structures ever created by humans. Its true purpose remains debated.
