History books say World War I began in Sarajevo, but they rarely talk about the love story at the center of it all.
In this video, I explore the many layers of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It starts with the forbidden romance between Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Chotek, a couple who challenged the royal court to be together, and whose lives ended tragically on the Latin Bridge.
From there, the story moves forward to Sarajevo’s more recent past. I look at the scars left by the Bosnian War, from the peaceful emerald waters of the Spring of Bosna to the narrow Tunnel of Hope that kept the city alive during a 1,425 day siege. This is a city that survived isolation, violence, and division, and is still finding its way today.
