History of Daytona International Speedway Bike Week . . . . . .
Daytona Bike Week traces its roots back to January 24, 1937, when the first Daytona 200 race was held on a 3.2‑mile beach‑road course south of Daytona Beach. The inaugural winner was Ed Kretz of Monterey Park, CA, riding an American‑made Indian motorcycle, averaging 73.34 mph DaytonaBikeWeek.com. The race was called the “Handlebar Derby” by local racing writers and was timed to the local tide tables Daytona Bike Week.
Early Years and WWII Interruption . . . . . .
The Daytona 200 ran annually from 1937 to 1941. In 1942, it was canceled due to World War II fuel and parts rationing, though the “unofficial” Bike Week party continued DaytonaBikeWeek.com. By 1947, the race resumed under promoter Bill France, drawing a record 176 riders.
