How many times have you been captivated by a stunning commercial? Products are a part of our everyday lives, and product commercials are a big part of our filmmaking lives. Many product shots are done with extremely complicated setups and expensive equipment; but they don’t always have to be that way. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we are going to show you how to shoot three different types of product commercials, that you can use to light any number of projects.

In this video, Valentina from the A-Team walks us through how to light and shoot three completely different product shots. First, she identifies what the product is that she will be shooting. The material of the product will have a big effect on how light reacts to it. Second, she decides what environment the product will look best in. In addition to lighting, production design plays a big part in product cinematography. Lastly, she adds movement to the shot. This can be done either through camera movement, or adding movement to the set so that the product isn’t static.

The main techniques used in this video are reflections, shadows, and separation. Reflections refers to the reflectiveness of the product itself. Some materials are more reflective of others, and you either fight this reality, or embrace it. Shadow refers to the contrasting light made by the sources in your setups. Products can allow for better use of hard lighting, but it is also important to know how to achieve even light with minimal shadows. Separation refers to the separation between the product and the background in shots with a lot of depth. There are several ways to achieve separation and it can add a nice quality to your shots.

Ultimately, there are hundreds of different ways to shoot products. Each product requires a unique approach to lighting it. This includes the material, the shape, and what the product actually does. Before getting carried away, think about what makes sense for the product you’re shooting. However, this is also a chance to get creative. Try experimenting with different objects around your house. See what lighting setups work best for you and stick with those. There’s no right way to light a product commercial, just have fun with it.
