♦ Notre Dame de Bois Vert is a well-known place of pilgrimage for the Champsaurins since the 7th century. Oral tradition reports that Saint Clair, living in Vienna, passed through this place, performed a miracle and after blessing a spring, made it miraculous in particular with regard to eye conditions. This source still exists. The initial chapel from the 7th century was destroyed in 1575 by the troops of Lesdiguières. The current chapel (photo) was built at the end of the 17th century, probably in 1685. It is smaller than the initial chapel from the 7th century.
At an altitude of 1200m, the chapel is located above La Fare, not far from Saint Bonnet en Champsaur, at the foot of the high cliffs of Mont Moutet. The place is surrounded by a magnificent larch forest. The 7th century chapel was called “de Beauvoir” in dialect “de Béu Veïre” meaning “Beautiful Greenery”……and that is the case. But Wikipedia indicates on the other hand that the name comes rather from the Occitan meaning “de Beau voir” (Belvedere) and that “Béu Veïre” would have been a local deformation. In any case, the place is peaceful, magnificent and overlooking the entire Champsaur valley.
The cenotaph was built in 1925 by Antoine Taix. This is a monument erected in memory of his mother Mélanie Taix (originally from Chaudun) but which does not contain her remains. As we said above, Antoine Taix of Champsaurin origin, had made his fortune in the USA, and in 1925 he decided to renovate the chapel of ND de Bois Vert, putting 2 large statues (St Vincent de Paul and Saint Clair who stand found in the cenotaph) 2 stained glass windows, a fountain stele dedicated to his sister.
This cenotaph measures approximately 3m on a side. Inside there is a table and two stone benches (I was surprised because picnicking in a cenotaph…..) dominated by a large statue of St Clair. On either side 2 stained glass windows: one representing Saint Melanie (the saint protector of his mother) and the other representing him himself in the presence of 2 Indians. This masonry work is surmounted by a metal dome topped with an openwork cross.
